About the course

Live online UX research seminars

This course (re)introduces and distills UX research to make useful products based on evidence.

I created this course based on my experience from the trenches as UX researcher to be an actionable explainer of UX Research.

There is no BS, no fillers, no AI slop and no fluff in what you'll learn. It is all hard earned practical knowledge I share. All insights and methods I give, I live every day while conducting UX research for complex systems.

In the course we will survey various UX research methods and examine how they are applicable for your context. Irrespective of you being a UX professional or not. There is a lot of hands-on activities. Our class shares and engages and we learn from each other.

We will unpack UX research and most importantly understand how you can use UX research to discover what is worth building and how to figure out if it has been built well for the end users -- so that you can take it back to your team and apply UX research where it matters the most. No prior UX research knowledge is needed for this course; if you have it, then great!

At the end of the 12+ hours course you will know how the application of UX research will help you make the right decisions for your product and how to move forward!

Testimonials from participants

What participants said about their experience with the "UX Research for Product Professionals" course

"Most UX research courses teach you the methods. This course teaches you the job.

You come away with a real toolkit: how to plan and run usability tests and how to measure what you find with UX KPIs like SUS and UMUX-Lite, so your results are something you can put a number on and defend. But the tools are the easy part to list.."

"From the very first session, I felt that this wasn't just a typical series of lectures.

It was a course full of open-ended discussions and hands-on activities that made even the more abstract concepts and complex models much easier to understand and apply.

The course material was pure gold, and I'll definitely keep coming back to it and applying it in my work."

E. V. UX Designer

"If you're not a UX Researcher or a Designer, it might feel exotic or a waste of time to take a course on UX Research and you may be right for a lot of courses out there, but this particular one is a game changer.

I guarantee you'll enjoy this course, no matter your background, especially if you're into Lean principles."

About me

A UX researcher with a Machine Learning PhD.

I am a software engineer who, a long time ago, became a UXer to help make useful products!

I love building systems as much as educating. I bring my experience of 27+ years in the software industry to my students everywhere.

I recently led the Consensys Platform Team's user research, which produced the open source AskO11y 'AI-powered observability assistant' Grafana plug-in.

In previous projects I have worked mostly in enterprise and finance environments, as well as in mobile telecoms and embedded systems.

I specialise in product discovery and UX measurement and I love both qualitative and quantitative user research as well as team coaching, requirements elicitation and the integration of UX research into software production. I must have conducted thousands of user sessions already.

Believe it or not I have a machine learning PhD as well as a computer communications MSc and BEng from the University of Essex. I am also a Certified Scrum Master (Scrum Alliance CSM) and hold a UX Master Certificate (in UX Research, Interaction Design, and Web Design) from Nielsen Norman Group.

In a previous life I was researching and building content recommender systems with ML, something that seems so current today.

If you are worried about AI and how this reflects in UX research..... I got your back, bring your questions to the course!

Some of my talks

I've produced a lot of public content, giving talks and workshops at conferences, meetups and podcasts around the world.

Course Testimonials

What course participants say

"John doesn't hide the messier truth of working in a product team, which was never really the scope of the class but turned out to be some really useful material. He's honest about how stakeholder pressure, team dynamics and organizational politics shape UX research"

D. S. UX Designer

LinkedIn

"All my respect goes to John, who managed to make vague concepts and mathematical models much more approachable and understandable.

I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to build practical UX research skills and learn how to make better, more user-centered product decisions."

E. V. UX Designer

LinkedIn

"I've taken plenty of UX courses before, but this one felt different from the very first session.

Through the real examples and hands-on exercises, UX Research stopped being something abstract and became something I can apply directly in my work.
Thank you, John, for the care and dedication you put into every lesson."

M. M. UX Researcher

LinkedIn

"I'm a Software Engineer with an interest in Product Development and I found a lot of value in this course. The knowledge you gain is 100% essential if you want to create a new product or manage an existing one, because all products are meant to have users.

If you build something that no user wants to use, then you've created waste. Of course, there are ways to eliminate waste and this course will set you on this path.

Also, John is a great example of the above approach as he's highly skilled at measuring feedback and adjusting to it."

Y. K. Software Engineer

LinkedIn

"As a software QA engineer, I took this course expecting it to be a useful addition to my skillset. What I gained was a new perspective on my own work.

In QA, I'm used to asking whether a product works as specified. This course taught me to consider not only whether a product works as specified, but also whether it works for the people using it and how to measure that. This is a shift in perspective.

I would recommend this course to anyone looking to build a practical foundation in UX research, regardless of their background."

Why join now?

From the testimonials of the participants themselves

"This course gave me much more confidence in conducting UX research.

The hands-on exercises made it easy to put every concept into practice instead of just learning the theory and they give a proper reality check on the challenges that might come up.

Also, the practical tips coming from extensive experience for running better user interviews and usability tests give a newcomer a significant head start that drives the quality of the outcome.

Furthermore, I really appreciated the advice on getting stakeholder buy-in, which is something I had always found challenging.

A highly recommended and enjoyable course!."

E. N. UX Designer

"Go for it if you want to have a quick overview on the fundamentals and landscapes of UX research.

Don't worry about your background. It has been encouraging and welcoming to talk with peers and the instructor John.

You'll get to learn from them tips of effectively communicating with stakeholders.

Ask questions, and you will get even more!"

"John is an excellent mentor who gives us real tools to address professional and personal challenges, inside and outside the realm of UXR.

He connects the dots with us interactively, going deep into surfacing value for us, is very straightforward, and goes out of his way to make each lesson more masterful and us more intuitive, thoughtful and capable.

Our group bonded so well, that we did not want to leave after the sessions and kept asking for more.

Upon completing this course, I feel grounded again in UXR, happy that I did not forget the art and craft of user research, and capable of coming back to the field and bringing value to teams and products, with messy and polished ways."
